Bwyd Abertawe has grown from a grassroots movement since March 2021, and is a network of food system stakeholders within the City and County of Swansea area, including everyone who is interested in sustainable food for Swansea!
Governed by Terms Of Reference, the broad structure includes a Steering Group, and wider Bwyd Abertawe network. As well as sub-groups formed by the Steering Group to fulfil specific tasks and projects under the Bwyd Abertawe action plan. Working for public benefit through being; inclusive; independent; accountable; transparent; ethical; focused on addressing priority needs; aiming for lasting beneficial impact.
The purpose of Bwyd Abertawe Steering Group is to:
provide strategic direction and leadership for Bwyd Abertawe
ensure the vision and aims of Bwyd Abertawe are developed and met
enable Bwyd Abertawe to operate as a participatory network, and influence change across Swansea’s food system
Bwyd Abertawe recently secured Welsh Government’s Sustainable Food Partnerships Funding (2023); to enable projects that will progress Swansea’s sustainable food priorities.
Bwyd Abertawe's current objectives are:
Project funding: Make funding and support available to local existing and new projects; to develop innovative and sustainable solutions to local food insecurity.
Co-production: Continue to consult, map and engage with a diverse range of communities and organisations, and co-produce solutions to food insecurity in line with the Sustainable Food Places framework.
Supply chains: Connect local producers to their communities, shorten supply chains and promote food citizenship. Support community and home growing practices for hyper local production.
Public profile: Further develop BA's public profile, via website, local events and Social Media development.
Build Bwyd Abertawe network: Steering and working-groups, with cross sector / community representation.
Food strategies: Support key stakeholders to embed sustainable food strategies in their policies and plans.
Education and training: Promote and facilitate education / training across Swansea's food landscape.
Create BA 5 year plan: Based on community needs and partnership priorities.
In March 2023 Bwyd Abertawe launched Swansea Food Charter, at the Swansea City Conference.
