Blaenau Gwent Food Partnership

Blaenau Gwent Food Partnership was established in May 2021 with the aim to set in motion an ambitious strategy that addresses the challenges and opportunities within Blaenau Gwent’s food system.  The Partnership will play a pivotal role in coordinating local action on issues such as food access, land use and the development of a ‘Good Food Movement’.

Hosted in the 3rd Sector by Tai Calon Housing Association the steering group consists of Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council, Gwent Association of Voluntary Organisations, Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, Aneurin Leisure Trust and Natural Resources Wales. The group firmly believes that making sustainable food a focus for the area will result in making healthy, affordable food more equitable.

The Partnerhsip also recognises the huge value of community engagement and action, and wants to encourage people of all ages afrom cross the county to become food citizens, in turn developing and nurturing an active food community in the area.

What we do

The partnership has been key in kickstarting several good food initiatives across the borough. We've seen Slow Cooker Clubs established, community gardens providing fresh produce for cooking projects tackling food insecurity and establishing school holiday enrichment activities in previously underserved communities.

Cost of Living has been a key focus of recent work, seeing the partnership approach embedded in the Local Authorities approach to tackling the crisis. This has seen emergency money released to a large section of the partnership network recieinvg support for food redistribution.

Blaenau Gwent Food Partnership are leading the regional approach to improving Healthy Start uptake this brings together stakeholders accross all of Gwent to understand the barriers faced in not utilising the Healthy Start scheme.

As part of Good Food movement activities, the partnership borrowed the Little Veg Libraries from Foodwise Leeds which saw all of the traditional book libraries host seed libraries in the spring.
